Bologna hotels with parking

Short version: book a hotel that either sits outside the centro storico with its own car park, or one inside the centre that registers your plate so you can legally drive in and reach its garage. Do not just turn up and drive into the old town. The cameras will catch you.

Bologna is small and walkable once you're parked, so a car is more of a liability than an asset inside the centre. Here's how parking actually works, then where to stay depending on whether you want to be in the thick of it or just want an easy in-and-out.

Two ways to do it

There are really only two sane approaches when you arrive with a car.

1. Stay inside the centre, let the hotel handle the ZTL

Plenty of central hotels and guesthouses will take your plate number, register it for ZTL access, and either have a private garage or a deal with a nearby paid car park. This is the most comfortable option if you want to step out the door into the sights. The catch: "parking" at a central hotel is often a paid garage spot, not free, and it can be a few minutes' walk away. Always confirm in writing that they will register your plate, what the parking costs per night, and exactly which gate to enter by.

2. Stay just outside, park free, walk or hop a bus in

The easier-on-the-nerves route is to base yourself outside the ZTL, near the train station or out by the Fiera (the exhibition district to the northeast). Many of these hotels have their own free or cheap parking and no ZTL headache at all, since you never need to drive into the restricted core. You're a short walk or a quick bus ride from the centre. If your hotel parking is just "a nearby garage"

Many central properties point you to an attended public car park rather than a private spot. That's usually fine, and often the smartest move: most of Bologna's staffed garages send your plate to the municipality themselves, so you can drive in to reach them without buying a ZTL pass in advance. Underground car parks near the centre, like the one by the Montagnola park north of Piazza Maggiore, are built for exactly this. Expect to pay a daily rate, and ask your hotel which garage they recommend and whether they get you a guest discount.

Do you even need the car?

Honest answer for most visitors: park it and forget it. Bologna's centre is flat, compact and covered by porticoes, so you can reach almost everything on foot. Save the car for day trips out to Modena, Ferrara or the Apennine hills, and the rest of the time get around the old town with the city's buses and your own two feet. You'll spend less on parking and skip the stress of nudging a car through medieval lanes.

Where to stay, by priority

Parking is one filter. Once it's sorted, pick the area and style that fits the trip. A few starting points:

• Want to be steps from the main square? See hotels around Piazza Maggiore.
• Arriving and leaving by car or train, no fuss? Look at stays by the central station.
• After character over convenience? Browse Bologna's boutique hotels or the city's top luxury addresses.
• Travelling with kids and a lot of luggage? A driveway helps, so start with family-friendly hotels.
